报告摘要:
Biological species have plenty of microstructures that we can learn from and utilize in various kinds of applications. In this talk, I will focus on two kinds of bio-inspired nanostructures and explore their applications in energy conversion and storage. One is the periodic nanostructure found in some of the insects and butterflies, which shows a structural color. The other is the dendritic structure found in leaf veins or spiracles, which governs the mass flow and gas diffusion. I will introduce the fabrication of these two types of bio-inspired structures by using electrochemical anodic and cathodic depositions, which are facile, versatile and controllable methods to fabricate nanostructured electrodes for energy applications. In the first part, I will give a brief review on the use of TiO2 nanotube photonic crystals to direct the propagation of light and/or slow down the group velocity of light (photon management) for enhanced light harvesting in dye-sensitized solar cells. In the second part of my talk, I will give a few examples on the electrochemical depositions of dendritic nanostructures with heterogeneous electrical properties for various kinds of energy applications.
